A History of Food Organizing at Concordia
1960s
The major accomplishment that came out of this era was the establishment of the G lounge. The G Lounge has long been a vital student space on the Loyola Campus.
Its in the early 2000s that the University makes the move to exclusivity agreements. Sudexo gets the first contract, which is taken over by Chartwells in 2013 who maintain control of the Food Contract for the next 10 years. Students continue to mobilize around food, particularly with the Concordia Greenhouse. In 2004 the Concordia Greenhouse began as a working group of Sustainable Concordia. There is a focus on production from students. In 2007, Concordia Students begin to put pressure on the University to ban the sale of plastic water bottles on campus. This officially passed in 2011.
1970s
The 1970s is when two student bars were opened. In 1973, the CSU opened the Hive Pub on the Loyola campus. In 1977 Reggies opened on the 7th floor of the Hall Building.
1980s
Cafe-X first opens in the VA building. Cafe-X was a vegetarian cafe and student lounge space that was run by the Fine Arts Faculty.
1990s
The 1990s are the era of students actively challenging the corporate food systems. Students organize around health food on campus.
In 1997 Frigo Vert was founded as a buyers club to purchase health food. In 1999, the People’s Potato was started, they are cooking out of the Frigo Vert and serving their food in the basement of Reggie’s (which moved to the mezz of the Hall Building, in 1994).
2000s
Its in the early 2000s that the University makes the move to exclusivity agreements. Sudexo gets the first contract, which is taken over by Chartwells in 2013 who maintain control of the Food Contract for the next 10 years.

There is a focus on production from students. In 2007, Concordia Students begin to put pressure on the University to ban the sale of plastic water bottles on campus. This officially passed in 2011.
2010s
We see the development of a plethora of different student projects focused on production, processing, distribution and waste management. Students are focused around mobilizing to have the University remove multinational corporations and exclusivity agreements on campus.
Urban Agriculture Projects:
In 2011 City Farm School began as a working group of the Concordia Greenhouse and is an urban farm internship program focused on small-scale agriculture from seed to market. In 2015, Campus Potager began as a working group of the Concordia Food Coalition to produce food on campus. In 2016 HydroFlora joined the scene. Finally in 2019 Mind.Heart.Mouth begins as an intergenerational project growing food on the Loyola Campus. These projects also have the opportunity to sell their food at the Concordia Farmers Market (established in 2016). The CSU completes a feasibility study to develop a Greenhouse on the Loyola Campus, but this project never came to fruition.
2020s
The University once again signs an exclusivity agreement. Students continue to put pressure on the administration using direct and indirect tactics.
Student groups and Hospitality Concordia work to create a pilot project out of the CJ Space, where the Hive opens its third location. Co-op CultivAction, takes over the farm plots once run by City Farm School on the Loyola Campus launching both an educational component and CSA Baskets.
